Introduction
Ericsson Device Analytics Lab to Field ("EDALF", "the App", "we", "us", or "our") is a mobile network performance measurement tool developed by Ericsson. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, store, and share information when you use our application.
By installing and using the App, you consent to the collection and use of information as described in this Privacy Policy.
Information We Collect
Device and Network Information
We collect technical information about your device and its network connectivity, including:
- Device identifiers: device model, manufacturer, Android version, SDK version, and device ID
- Cellular network data: network type (LTE, 5G, 3G), carrier identity (MCC/MNC), cell tower identifiers (Cell ID, TAC, LAC, eNodeB, PCI), and signal quality measurements (RSRP, RSRQ, RSSI, RSSNR, CQI, ASU level)
- 5G NSA measurements: RSRP, RSRQ, SNR, and NR-ARFCN for non-standalone 5G connections
- Neighboring cell information: signal data from adjacent cell towers
- Wi-Fi state: Wi-Fi connection status and network state
- Network performance: upload and download speeds, latency, jitter, data transfer rates (TX/RX bytes)
- Battery information: battery level, health, status, technology, temperature, and voltage
Location Information
We collect precise and approximate location data, including:
- GPS coordinates: latitude, longitude, altitude (orthometric and ellipsoid)
- Location metadata: accuracy, speed, bearing
- Background location: location data while the App is running in the background during active measurement sessions
- NMEA data: raw satellite data for altitude correction
Sensor Data
We collect environmental sensor readings from your device:
- Atmospheric pressure
- Humidity
- Light level
- Temperature
Performance Test Data
When you initiate or when scheduled tests run, we collect:
- Speed test results: download and upload throughput measurements
- Latency measurements: TCP handshake latency data
- End-to-end performance metrics: multi-stream throughput, channel stability, and streaming threshold calculations
App Usage Data
- Screen time during measurement sessions
- App usage statistics (with your permission)
- Measurement session start and end times
- Timezone information
How We Collect Information
Data is collected through:
- Passive monitoring: Continuous collection of radio signal, location, network traffic, battery, and sensor data during active measurement sessions
- Active testing: On-demand or scheduled speed tests and latency measurements initiated by the App according to configured test policies
- Device activation: When you activate the App using an activation code or QR code
How We Use Information
We use the collected information for:
- Network performance analysis: Evaluating mobile network quality and coverage
- Key Performance Indicator (KPI) calculation: Computing metrics such as Time to Content, Channel Stability, and Streaming Bitrate Thresholds
- Network optimization: Providing data to support network planning and improvement
- Service operation: Authenticating devices, delivering test schedules, and managing measurement sessions
- Altitude correction: Using atmospheric pressure and weather data to improve GPS altitude accuracy
Data Storage and Transmission
- Measurement data is stored locally on your device and transmitted to Ericsson's backend servers
- Data is transmitted to:
- Ericsson Device Analytics backend services hosted on Microsoft Azure
- Azure IoT Hub for telemetry streaming
- Azure Atlas Weather API (location coordinates only, for atmospheric pressure data)
- Data is serialized using Apache Avro format for efficient transmission
- All network communications use HTTPS/TLS encryption
Data Sharing
We may share collected data with:
- Ericsson internal teams: For network performance analysis and optimization
- Enterprise customers: If your device is enrolled in an enterprise measurement program, data may be shared with the associated enterprise organization
- Cloud service providers: Microsoft Azure hosts our backend infrastructure and processes data on our behalf
We do not sell your personal information to third parties.
Data Retention
Measurement data is retained on our servers for the duration necessary to fulfill the purposes described in this policy. Local data on your device can be cleared through your device's application settings.
Third-Party Services
The App integrates the following third-party services:
- Google Play Services Location: For fused location data
- Microsoft Azure: Cloud infrastructure for data storage and processing
- OpenStreetMap (OSMDroid): Map display within the App
- Google ML Kit: Barcode/QR code scanning for device activation
These services have their own privacy policies that govern their use of data.
Permissions
The App requires the following permissions:
| Permission | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Location (Fine, Coarse, Background) | GPS positioning during measurements |
| Phone State | Reading cellular network and signal information |
| Internet & Network State | Transmitting data and monitoring connectivity |
| Wi-Fi State | Monitoring Wi-Fi connection status |
